Soul-Patrol was launched in 1995, by Bob Davis and Mike Davis. As a college student, Bob Davis, and his friends would sit around listening to music into the wee hours of the morning. They were conscious of the world around them and the political and social changes that were taking place.

"It was a period in time where all young people thought they could change the world," Davis said.

Many artists of the era also were politically conscious, and it was reflected in their music.

Davis wanted to bring that same consciousness to the worldwide audience of Soul-Patrol, which provides information and news about the black music scene and puts it in social, political and historical context.

The Soul-Patrol (Sub titled: "Great Black Music From the Ancient To The Future, In honor of the AACM) allows its Web site contributors to publish interviews, essays and reviews and to have a worldwide dialogue with people about the past, present and future of black music. Soul-Patrol.com receives 3 million hits per months, has 25,000 subscribers to its newsletter and has 70,000 radio listeners per month.

Davis said "We have reached the point in our communication where we need to take that conversation off the internet and let folks, specifically younger people, gain access to that because we think we just might be able to benefit from the give and take that results from having such a dialogue."

Towards that end, the Soul-Patrol holds an annual convention that gives members an opportunity to meet and discuss music. The convention also provides a platform for artists who are universally known , still making music, yet no longer have current top 40 hits on the charts and for younger underground soul artists who look to the past for their inspiration.

Davis said his site is one of the few major 100 percent black-owned Web sites on the Internet. Not only do Bob Davis and his brother own the site, they own the technology that makes it possible - the servers.

He said his brother told him, "If you don't own the means of production, the same thing's going to happen to you that happened to the artists you're talking about."

This year's convention, scheduled July 30-31 at the Kennedy Center in Willingboro, N.J., is expected to draw music lovers from primarily the eastern seaboard, but Soul-Patrol Members from over twenty states and Europe will be in attendance.

The next day will feature seminars on black music and its social impact, ranging from Motown history to black culture to rock 'n' roll. An awards show and cabaret is planned that evening.

Proceeds from the convention go to the Open Up My Heart Foundation, established by the Dells, R&B legends and Soul-Patrol members. The Open Up My Heart Foundation benefits the "forgotten victims" of 9/11, Davis said, people who are out of work or homeless as a result of the World Trade Center collapse.
