Korea's Icheon Rice Festival


FT. LEE, NJ August 31, 2004 -- The Korea National Tourism Organization and the Icheon Rice Festival organizers, Icheon City's Department of Tourism, Culture, invite you to experience our rice culture and harvest celebration.

Icheon Rice Festival is a festival that has been transformed into an international tourist festival by using themes such as rice, the symbol of Icheon City and autumn rice harvest, the highlight of its agrarian culture. During the festival, farmers working in the field and urbanites who leave the city life behind for rest become united and hold a feast celebrating a bountiful harvest.

The festival features various Madang (section)-an autumn harvest section where people sow and reap crops; a rural open-air market section where farmers sell their harvested crops; straw culture section where visitors can experience the rural farming culture; and the rice culture section which shows everything related to culture and rice.

Main Events:
Madangjil (rice threshing), straw craftwork-making, Injeolmi (glutinous rice cake making), rice-pounding, Geobuknori (group performances featuring a turtle), Ganggangsullae (traditional circle dance), Samulnori (folk percussion quartet), Umjip (dug-out mud hut) making, countryside open-air market, kite flying, straw shoes making, and a folk contest.

Venue:
Seolbong Park in Gyeonggi-do (province).

From Seoul, Icheon is approximately 1 hour by bus.

Nearby sites of interest include:
Haegang Ceramic Museum, Icheon pottery village, Icheon Hot Springs, and Seolbong Sanseong Fortress.
