The Soroptimist International of San Francisco appoints new President and Board member


August 25, 2004 -- The Soroptimist International of San Francisco (SISF), a volunteer service organization for women in business, management and the professions, has announced the appointment of the 2004-2005 President and Board of Directors. The Board will be lead by the new President, Jane Lee, who served as Vice-president last year.

"The Soroptimist in San Francisco is a powerhouse of professionals, whose mission is to "make a difference for women" through volunteer service to the community and by promoting leadership for and empowerment by women everywhere. Projects are carefully chosen to address challenges unique to today's women," explains President Jane. "70% of 1.2 billion people living in desperate poverty are women. We are in the position to change the live for women anywhere from the Tenderloin to Afghanistan and Richmond to Rwanda."

President Jane Lee joined the Soroptimists of San Francisco in 2001 since she and her husband Danny relocated here from Bahrain. A British native, Jane was born and raised in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. She studied hotel management at Yorkshire Coast College and after graduating chose to pursue a career in housekeeping management.

Jane spent five years working for The Queen of England in several royal residences, followed by two years working for The Crown Prince of Bahrain (Now King of Bahrain) in two of his residences. About her career Jane says, "I have had the good fortune to have worked in some unique situations and consider myself lucky that I actually love the work that I do". While in the employ of the Crown Prince, Jane met her husband Danny who was then an athletic director and basketball coach in Bahrain. Jane is now the Executive Housekeeper at the Huntington Hotel.

In addition to President Jane Lee, the new member of the Board are Vice president Anita Aaron, Executive Director of the Lighthouse for the Blind; Secretary Xenia von Wedel Rosen, Public Relations at Terpin Communications Group; Treasurer Nanell Mawbey, Branch Manager, Montgomery Street Branch in San Franciscoat US Bank; as well as Club Directors Kay Tsenin, Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco and Maureen Sullivan, Vice-President of MG West Inc. in San Francisco.

Service to women and the community is what the Soroptimists are all about. The Soroptimists International of San Francisco have done many projects benefiting the San Francisco community. The following are only a few of the many projects the club members have undertaken and supported during the past 80 years: Curry Senior Center (formerly North of Market Senior Center) – sine 1974, The Fireboat Phoenix, Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day walk, St. Vincent de Paul's Brennan House, The Library of the Lighthouse for the Blind, Goodwill Industries, Larkin Street Youth Center, Recreation for the Handicapped, Toolworks, Salvation Army, S.A.G.E., The Sea Scouts, and many more.

Soroptimist Club Grants for Women and Girls
For the 2003-2004 club year, $175,000 in Soroptimist Club Grants for Women and Girls were given to Soroptimist club projects that benefit women and girls. Thirty-eight projects received grant funds in amounts ranging from $500-$10,000 for initiating or continuing innovative service projects that advance the status of women. Sample projects include refurbishing domestic violence shelters, providing job training for women in transition, financing legal services for low-income women, furnishing mammograms to women with no health insurance, and sponsoring enrichment programs for at-risk girls.
